Fossil Springs is a perennial favorite. Why is it a year-round favorite? Simple. While most people are in a Fall state of mind, my thoughts are about waterfalls (above, on, in, and under). This weekend was no exception. The relatively warm and clear water of Fossil Creek invited me to play.
Mountains do not call me. They know that I will not answer.
Waterfalls do not call me. They know that I will be there.
Some friends camped. They reported the air temperature dropping to 34F. We arrived to the springs around 10:00 A.M. The air temperature was in the mid 50s. The main spring was 70.3F, as it has been for most of 2018.
The air temperature at the waterfall, Fossil Creek Falls, was 66F around 10:30 A.M. The water temperature was 69.2F. Cold? Yes. Did we get in the water? No doubt.
We first explored the Secret Grotto.
UNDER THE WATERFALL
Once in the Secret Grotto, it is time to make friends . . . with the fish. This works much better when the water is clear. I take goggles to better see the fish under the waterfall.
Ray making peace with the fish. The water temperature was around 69F at the Fossil Creek Falls.
THE COOL ROOM
The Cool Room is named for the impression that one has upon entering: “Cool!”
The next photo is the view from inside the Cool Room (underwater), looking outward from the underwater entrance/exit.
THE TOILET BOWL
I strongly encourage staying out of the Toilet Bowl.
The following photographs are rare in that this is the first time that the water was this clear inside the Toilet Bowl. Without a mask, it will not look like this underwater in the Toilet Bowl. Even with a mask on, I was unable to see the exit as clearly as captured in these photographs.
THE GREEN POOL
There is something for everyone at the Green Pool. There are 10-foot cliffs to jump off, small waterfalls, fish, underwater exploring, an upper pool, a lower pool, and an Olympic-size, reed-lined pool with a downed tree to swim under. The Green Pool is a fun place to enjoy with just your friends.
We saved the Blue Cove for last.
THE BLUE COVE
The Blue Cove at Fossil Creek
We played at Fossil Springs/Fossil Creek Falls for about four hours. My kind of Fall.
